Change the World From Your Basement

Or a coffee shop. Or the sidewalk. Anywhere really.

Every week, I descend to my basement studio here in my house.
(Some have commented that they would be sad if my white brick wall changed with some venue changes in the future, even. ) I fire up our multi-computer studio setup that combines the use of Telestream Wirecast, Audacity, Youtube Live, and Google Hangout to bring together enthusiasts and interview subjects int he worlds of technology and professional wrestling. On a normal night, I’m having conversations with people from New York and Texas without even thinking about the great distance between us.

“The world is at our finger tips. We can evoke emotion and start revolutions. We can connect across continents or broadcast around town. We made the world smaller. Now what world will we make from our basements next.”

That was something I wrote on Instagram with the included picture. There are people doing even more with less.  Periscope is being used to circumvent actual government censorship. We are putting people in the middle of rallies to send a message to legislators with (relatively) cheap 360 degree hardware. I loved Podcasting because it was a way for me to express myself without limitations. And all of this has made the world smaller so we can do something bigger.

Your Social Media Roles

Part of my belief about Social Media is you have to find a place in your life for it to be effective.  It has to be something where you look at the things happening around you in your business and can easily parse that into something you can use as content.

I had been having a struggle lately.  My desire to attack Snapchat with a little more purpose had me realizing I was then falling off on other platforms.  Namely Instagram.

So I finally settled on a shift.

Snapchat is my scratch pad.  A place to make media, which is being shared with my main circle via Stories on the platform.  If I like what I did, it gets repurposed to Twitter as individual videos I can share, or on Facebook, I’ve been using it as sort of a video journal post on how my day was.

Instagram is for stories. I don’t JUST post ok pictures on there.  Instead of a flux of posts if I’m at an event, I find one picture that I take from an event, then take the opportunity to talk about the event, give some thoughts, and make something a little deeper.

Twitter is for thoughts.  A place to pontificate in sound bites.  Aside from the systems in place to help promote across my many accounts, each is a silo to share and converse amongst the public.

Facebook is for communication. Yes I know that’s a term all of this can fall under, but I mean it as deeper and broader communication.  Groups, shares, threads, and messenger discussions.  I crosspost from Twitter, so many of those same thoughts become paragraphs as others chime in on this platform.

Slack is for business. It’s the Facebook where we attempt to have specific conversations about the work we do around the Podcasts and projects at Sorgatron Media

It’s Finally Time for YOU To Look at Snapchat

It has been reported that Snapchat is starting to overtake Twitter in usage. The disappearing media platform also has recently issued an update that takes Discover sections to a new level to bring you content and expand exploring in the app.

Are you paying attention yet?

Snapchat has been the consistent sticking point for many I talk to.  The platform hasn’t been accessible to some, keeping them away.  What do they do on the platform?  Why would they want to be there?

I remember these same questions being asked of Twitter all those years ago before we saw the little bird on every advertising platform possible. Everyone just ended up there.  In the last couple months, I’ve seen the online outliers who are usually on the forefront finally come over to the Snap side.

I’m not telling you how to use the platform.  Just that you should be taking a serious look.  Poking.  Prodding.  Creating. Seeing what brands like WWE or Taco Bell are doing with it.  And seeing how it could potentially serve your mission online.

What am I doing with it? Right now, I’m looking at the platform as a micro video blogging platform for my day to day ventures.  My interpretation is sort of a Video Twitter (140 Characters = 10 seconds).  You can find some of my snaps output on my personal Facebook and Twitter.

Coffee Brings Together

I believe in Coffee.  It brings people together.

On Basic Sorganomics I had given the idea that your online community should resemble a coffee shop.  It’s how I like to meet new people all over the city.

Recently, we had another edition of our Sorgatron Media Coffee.  Originally this was my attempt to pull together all of the creative minds we collaborate with in our Podcast network and more.  As we moved to Work Hard Pittsburgh, I wanted to give an opportunity for others to come in and chat with that group and hopefully become inspired in their own projects.

We had a wonderful crew this month including our colleagues representing Panel Riot, Rizz Plays Games, AwesomeCast, and the Scarehouse Podcast hanging out along with some new faces looking to conquer video on Social Media for her company and another looking to resurrect his passion and teach online via podcasting or video. After a couple hours of chatter, it felt like our new faces had a little more confidence, and maybe a little bit of direction, to proceed with their projects and initiatives.  We discussed everything from Facebook Video to Podcasting to experimenting with 360 video.

This is the awesome melting pot we get to experience. Something that creates new opportunity for everyone involved.

Going 360

360 has obviously captured my attention.  Obviously.  It’s the time that the format has become usable with affordable-ish 360 cameras like the one Chilla has been playing with, and accessible experiences in Facebook and Google Cardboard.

This has become even more accessible to the smartphone users thanks to something we’ve been experimenting called Splash.  If you have used the Panorama feature on an iPhone or other smart phone apps, the process should seem familiar.  You will have to spin a few times as you take a mix of individual videos and images in a 360 viewable area that appears as an interactive video on Facebook or in the app.  The app is nice that it does include Google Cardboard support so you can further immerse yourself.

The results can be a little wonky sometimes with odd stitching and peculiar moving objects when you scan the submissions so far.  But speaking with one of the Splash team members, they are working to educate the public on how to make better 360 videos and aim to make the platform a sort of “snapchat for 360” use that you can capture a scene rather quickly and share it.

The platform can be super powerful.  Music Splashes and samples with multiple versions of a person dancing show the possibilities.  What Splash is missing is the right mix of creatives that made Vine or Snapchat pop with stand out content.  (hint: go play with it.  That could be you, early adopters.)
